A religious sculpture (Shiva Lingam) from the Majaphit Hindu Empire in Indonesia, circa 14th Century. It is made with limestone with a beautiful patination.
Shiva lingam, is an abstract representation of the Hindu deity Shiva in Shaivism. It is a cult image in Hindu temples dedicated to Shiva, also found in smaller shrines, or as self-manifested natural objects.
Majapahit was one of the last major Hindu empires of the region and is considered to be one of the greatest and most powerful empires in the history of Indonesia and Southeast Asia, one that is sometimes seen as the precedent for Indonesia's modern boundaries.
