A gorgeously gold hued pair of Earrings hand carved from coconut shell, covered with 24K Gold Leaf. The pieces are mounted in 9K Gold and Black Rhodium plated Sterling Silver.

The ancient Royal Households of Angkor Wat, Cambodia and Borobudur, Indonesia, wore pieces like these in heavy gold which made their ear loops drop and become very long. Today, nobody would wear such heavy pieces anymore which made Lotus Arts de Vivre look around to find material which could replace the solid Gold. Our designers finally settled on carving the shells of coconuts thin, and on covering them with 24K Gold Leaf, they met the modern standards of comfort. A lot of craft is required to carve the coconut shells which are as hard as ivory and normal wood carving equipment does not work, and hence this necklace was carved by former ivory carving masters.

The history of carving Coconut shells date back originally to the ancient Asian culture, when the common man used the shells for every day household items which were decorated and used for ceremonial and utility purposes in homes with their medieval cultural lifestyle – which included bowls, spoons and cups. Popular for their sturdiness and beauty, it was also used to decorate watches, knives, guns and jewellery and on being jewelled were worn by the Kings and Queens of various eras.
