A strikingly intricate Japanese lacquer bag, designed with the world of the life under Sea on either sides, decorated with a ‘driftwood’ tree branch silhouette in Red Stone,  and a Ruby studded ball on 14K White Gold. Another striking Diamond studded ball, freshwater pearl and Peridot complete the side of the design, set beautifully amongst the Japanese lacquer work.

About Japanese Lacquer: Lacquer was first developed in China and later Japan. The material opened and offered to artists a wide scope to create beautiful paintings and pictures on furniture, trays, vases, cups and any kind meant for visual pleasure such as scenes from nature, mythology, and literature. The processes to reach this artistic level expanded into using silver, gold, inlay shell and other materials.
Maki-e lacquer is a distinctive Japanese lacquerware technique developed around 1200 years ago. Maki-e (literally: sprinkled picture) is Japanese lacquer sprinkled with gold or silver powder onto a thick layer of lacquer as a decoration, a complicated and highly refined and time-consuming application. Raden is a decorative technique that uses the iridescent parts of seashells like abalone, turban shells, and pearl oysters, which are shaved very thinly. Ra means a spiral shell and den means to decorate. The technique was conveyed to Japan from China about 1300 years ago, and marvelous examples can be seen at the Shoso-in Treasure House in Nara. The bag took nine months to produce from design to finish. As a limited piece, each piece will be unique due to the shape and size of the raw materials used.
This piece took over 8 months to design and produce, including the lacquering work in Japan.
