Hand-carved and hand-layered cinnabar lacquer cloud bowl with a mythical sterling silver dancing dragon, winding in and out of the bowl.

Lacquer was first developed in China and later Japan. The material opened and offered to artists a wide scope to create beautiful paintings and pictures on furniture, trays, vases, cups and any kind meant for visual pleasure such as scenes from nature, mythology, and literature. The processes to reach this artistic level expanded into using silver, gold, inlay shell and other materials.

The prime inspiration of ‘Cinnabar Lacquer Art’ comes from the natural material, Cinnabar or Dragon Blood that refers to the deep red color of lacquer which is a natural product made from the sap of the Lac tree. Lacquer is an eastern material collected from nature with extra ordinary properties, like water proof with high heat resistance, flexibility and is not and is not available in the west. Cinnabar lacquer has been around for thousands of years to waterproof containers and both the Chinese and Japanese civilizations have refined the application of lacquer into ART.

The Chinese (where it all started) developed the cinnabar, red lacquer by adding layers over layers of red natural lacquer on top of each other, each layer had to be dried and polished and it would take up to one hundred layers before the layers were thick enough for carving. Each layer would take 1-3 days and special ratios of oil and lacquer had to be kept making sure that the lacquer could be still carved after 4-7 months of layering. It is then hand carved with master carvers, making them stunning art pieces.
